Freshwater pearls are cultivated in mussels in rivers and lakes – primarily in China, which is now the world's largest producer. Unlike saltwater pearls, freshwater pearls consist almost entirely of nacre, giving them a particularly dense, beautifully shimmering surface. The crash-button shape results from a special cultivation process in which the pearls develop a slightly unregulated, organic silhouette – making each pearl unique. The soft grey of these pearls appears timelessly elegant and can be wonderfully combined with other stones and materials.
