Tourmaline A multi bead bracelet 3 mm faceted

Mineralogically, tourmaline is a borosilicate with a complex composition ((Na,Ca)(Li,Mg,Al)(Al,Fe,Mn)₆(Si₆O₁₈)(BO₃)₃(OH,F)₄), with a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5. The name comes from the Sinhalese word "toramali" ("mixed gemstones") – an apt description, as tourmaline is found in almost every color of the rainbow. The colors are created by various trace elements: iron for black (schorl), manganese for pink/red (rubellite), chromium/vanadium for green (verdelite), and iron/manganese for yellow/brown (dravite). A special feature: tourmaline is piezoelectric and pyroelectric – it becomes electrically charged through pressure or heat. The highly coveted Paraiba tourmaline (blue-turquoise, copper-colored) is one of the most valuable gemstones in the world. Grade A quality guarantees particularly clear stones with intense colors.
