Black tourmaline, also known as schorl, is mineralogically a cyclosilicate (NaFe²⁺₃Al₆(Si₆O₁₈)(BO₃)₃(OH)₄), Mohs hardness 7–7.5, trigonal crystal system. It owes its intense black color to its high iron content. Schorl is the most common tourmaline variety and has been used as a protective stone for centuries. Special feature: Tourmaline is piezoelectric and pyroelectric – it becomes electrically charged through pressure or heat. The faceted cut of the 4.5 mm beads enhances the natural luster of the deep black – balanced between delicate and expressive. Locations: Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Madagascar, USA, Alps.
Meaning in crystal healing
Black tourmaline is considered one of the strongest protective stones. It is said to protect against negative energies, electrosmog, and interference fields, to strengthen the personal energy field, and to ground. It is popular to be worn on the body as a talisman. It is said to be associated with the root chakra. These attributions are based on handed-down tradition and are not scientifically proven. They do not replace medical treatment.
