Mother-of-pearl is the mother of pearl, the inside of the shell. Depending on the type and color of the shell, mother-of-pearl can also look very different. The South Sea shell is white, the Tahitian shell is gray and the abalone shimmers in shades of blue and violet. Of course, the mother-of-pearl-like shimmer is always typical.
