Agates belong to the chalcedony group and thus to the quartz minerals. They form in cavities of volcanic rocks, where silicic acid solutions are deposited and solidify in phases. This layered structure creates the typical layers and patterns of agates – no two stones are alike. The individual layers can consist of chalcedony, crystalline quartz, jasper, or opal.
The play of colors in agates is diverse, and they are found worldwide. Natural agates primarily show muted brown and gray tones. Intensely colored agates in green, blue, or pink are usually dyed or heated and are therefore considered more of a gemstone.
Occurrences: Brazil, Uruguay, India, Madagascar, Morocco, Germany (Idar-Oberstein).
Meaning in crystal healing
Natural agates are attributed with a balancing and grounding effect in crystal healing. They are said to strengthen one's sense of reality and have a emotionally stabilizing effect. Brown agate is also said to have an organ-strengthening effect. These attributions are based on ancient tradition and are not scientifically proven. They do not replace medical treatment.
