Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony from the quartz group (SiO₂, Mohs hardness 6.5–7). The characteristic banding is created by rhythmic layer growth with various mineral inclusions. The warm dark yellow color is achieved through dyeing – a traditional and widely practiced method for agate.
