Agates belong to the chalcedony group and thus to the quartz minerals. They form in cavities of volcanic rocks, where silicic acid solutions are deposited and solidify in phases. This layered structure creates the typical layers and patterns of agates – no two stones are alike. The individual layers can consist of chalcedony, crystalline quartz, jasper, or opal.
Natural agates predominantly show muted grey and brown tones. The fine faceted cut of these beads particularly enhances the stone's natural shimmer. Important deposits are located in Brazil, Uruguay, India, Madagascar, Morocco, and Germany (Idar-Oberstein).
Meaning in crystal healing
In crystal healing, natural grey agates are attributed with a balancing and grounding effect. They are said to strengthen the sense of reality, promote self-confidence, and have a stabilizing effect on body and mind. These attributions are based on traditional beliefs and are not scientifically proven. They do not replace medical treatment.
