Agates, quartz minerals of the chalcedony group, form in cavities in volcanic rocks. The gradual solidification and drying process creates the layered markings and often bizarre patterns typical of agate. The individual layers of the agate can consist of chalcedony, crystalline quartz, jasper, or even opal.

Agates have a diverse range of colors, and they are found worldwide. However, agates are often dyed or fired. Therefore, it is safe to assume that all green, blue, and pink agates are dyed and therefore considered more of a gemstone than a healing stone.
