Howlite is a calcium borosilicate mineral first described in 1868 by Canadian geologist Henry How and named after him. It usually occurs in nodular masses and displays a characteristic white to cream base color with grey-black veins – a pattern reminiscent of marble. Howlite is a relatively soft mineral (hardness 3.5) and is often offered dyed to imitate other stones such as turquoise. The natural white variety captivates with its calm, clear appearance.
