Mineralogical Properties

Amazonite is a light blue-green to vibrant turquoise variety of potassium feldspar (KAlSi₃O₈) and thus belongs to the large family of feldspar minerals. Its characteristic color – from delicate light blue over fresh greenish-blue to vibrant turquoise – is caused by traces of lead and water in the crystal lattice. Its Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5. Amazonite crystallizes in the triclinic system and exhibits a characteristic waxy to vitreous luster, often with fine white veins or a checkerboard pattern (perthite intergrowths) that distinguish it from other turquoise-colored stones. It was named by Alexander von Humboldt, who called it the "Stone of the Amazon." The main deposit is in Brazil. Other occurrences: Peru, Russia, USA, Madagascar, India.
