Amethyst pendant

Amethyst, the violet variety of crystal quartz, was named after the Greek amethystos, "not drunken," because it was generally believed to protect against drunkenness.

Amethyst is found worldwide; the often impressively large amethyst geodes from Brazil are well known. They form in hollow vesicles in volcanic rocks. The violet color is due to iron deposition.
