The name Amethyst comes from Greek – amethystos means "not drunk". In ancient times, it was believed that the stone protected against the effects of wine, which is why drinking vessels were often made of amethyst.
Mineralogically, amethyst is the purple variety of crystal quartz. The characteristic color is caused by iron inclusions in the crystal lattice. The button cut – a flat, lenticular shape – is particularly suitable for necklaces and bracelets where the stones are meant to lie next to each other.
Major localities: Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Austria.
Meaning in Gemstone Therapy
In gemstone therapy, amethyst is attributed with a calming and clarifying effect. It is considered supportive in overcoming difficult phases of life and is said to promote concentration and intuition. It is also used as a protective stone against negative energies. These attributions are based on traditional lore and are not scientifically proven. They do not replace medical treatment.
