The name Amethyst comes from Greek – amethystos means "not intoxicated". In ancient times, people believed the stone protected against the effects of wine, which is why drinking vessels were often made of amethyst.

Mineralogically, amethyst is the violet variety of rock crystal. Its characteristic colour comes from iron inclusions in the crystal lattice, which are activated by natural radiation. Depending on the intensity of the iron inclusions, the colour scale ranges from delicate lavender to deep dark violet.

Amethyst is one of the most widespread gemstones worldwide. Important deposits are found in Brazil (especially Minas Gerais, known for large geodes), Uruguay, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar, Mexico, Sri Lanka, and Austria.
