Amazonite belongs to the feldspar group (microcline) and is a phyllosilicate with a triclinic crystal structure. Its characteristic light blue to strong turquoise color is due to traces of lead and water in the crystal lattice. The Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5 – making it sturdy enough for jewelry, but it should be protected from strong impacts. Amazonite exhibits a typical pearly luster and is often traversed by white veins, which give it a lively, natural pattern. It was named by Alexander von Humboldt, who called it the "Stone of the Amazon." The most important deposits are Brazil, Peru, and Russia.
