The name Amethyst comes from Greek – amethystos means "not intoxicated". In ancient times, people believed the stone protected against the effects of wine, which is why drinking vessels were often made of amethyst.

Mineralogically, amethyst is the purple variety of crystal quartz. The characteristic colour is created by iron inclusions in the crystal lattice, which are activated by natural radiation. The often impressively large amethyst geodes from Brazil, formed in volcanic rock cavities, are well-known.
