The name Amethyst comes from Greek – amethystos means "not drunken." In ancient times, it was believed that the stone protected against the effects of wine. Mineralogically, amethyst is the violet variety of crystal quartz; the color results from iron inclusions in the crystal lattice. The lavender-colored variety shows a particularly delicate, lilac violet – lighter and softer than the classic dark amethyst.

The faceted oval cut particularly highlights the gentle play of light in this color. Significant deposits are located in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Namibia, and Madagascar.
