The name Amethyst comes from Greek – amethystos means "not intoxicated". In ancient times, people believed the stone protected against the effects of wine, which is why drinking vessels were often made of amethyst.

Mineralogically, amethyst is the violet variety of crystalline quartz. The characteristic color results from iron inclusions in the crystal lattice, which are activated by natural radiation. The faceted round cut enhances the sparkle effect and makes the stone appear particularly vibrant.

Significant deposits are located in Brazil (Minas Gerais), Uruguay, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar, Mexico, Sri Lanka, and Austria.
