Chrome diopside is a chromium-rich variety of the mineral diopside (CaMgSi₂O₆) and belongs to the pyroxene group. Its name is derived from the Greek words "dis" (double), "opsis" (appearance), and "idos" (form) – a reference to its special crystallographic property. The characteristic, intense emerald green color is caused by traces of chromium in the crystal lattice – the same element that gives emerald and tsavorite their color. The Mohs hardness is 5.5 to 6.5. Chrome diopside crystallizes in the monoclinic system and exhibits a lively vitreous luster. It is one of the few natural alternatives to emerald and is primarily mined in Siberia (Russia) – hence it is also called "Siberian Emerald".
