The name ruby is derived from the Latin rubeus (“red”) and in the 12th century replaced the older term “carbuncle,” which was used for all red gemstones. Ruby belongs to the corundum group—the second-hardest mineral after diamond—and derives its characteristic red color from chromium inclusions in the crystal lattice. The button shape (flat-round) showcases the vivid red in a slight color gradient—each bead is a natural product with an individual character.
