Chrome diopside is a chromium-rich variety of the mineral diopside (CaMgSi₂O₆) from the pyroxene group, with a Mohs hardness of 5.5–6.5. The intense emerald green color is caused by traces of chromium in the crystal lattice – the same element that gives emeralds their color. It is primarily mined in Siberia (Russia), which is why it is also known as "Siberian emerald." Other locations: Pakistan, India, Finland, South Africa.
