Chrysoberyl – the name comes from Greek: "chrysos" means gold, and indeed it is its characteristic golden-yellow to greenish-yellow color that has made this stone famous since antiquity. Although it was once thought to be a beryl, it is mineralogically a distinct group – and home to some of the most sought-after gemstones in the world: the famous alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl.
