Chrysoprase is a green chalcedony, its name derived from the Greek "chrysos" (gold) and "prason" (leek). The ancient Egyptians considered it a protective and healing stone against black magic and disease.

Hildegard von Bingen also described the healing effects of chrysoprase for epilepsy, gout and poisoning.
