Mineralogy & History

Citrine is a variety of quartz (SiO₂) and gets its characteristic yellow to orange color from traces of iron in the crystal lattice. Natural citrine forms when amethyst or smoky quartz is altered by geothermal heat deep within the Earth – a process that takes millions of years. Significant deposits are found in Brazil (especially in Rio Grande do Sul), Madagascar, and Spain.

Its name is derived from the French citron (lemon) and refers to its typical color. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, citrine was worn as a protective stone against snakebites and evil thoughts. In the 17th century, it was known as “Scottish Topaz” and was used in Scotland for sword hilts and brooches.

A note on distinction: Many citrine stones available commercially are heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz. True, natural citrine is significantly rarer and usually shows paler, more uniform yellow tones.

Significance in Healing Stone Therapy

In healing stone therapy, citrine is described as a stone of joie de vivre, self-confidence, and inner strength. It is attributed with the following properties:

Energy & Motivation: Citrine is said to promote drive and initiative and help to formulate goals clearly and pursue them consistently. It is often used during phases of exhaustion or disorientation.

Self-Confidence & Expression: Associated with the solar plexus chakra, citrine is considered a stone that is supposed to strengthen the sense of one's own center and self-worth. It is linked with openness, optimism, and a positive attitude.

Emotional Level: Citrine is said to help release negative thought patterns and adopt a lighter, more joyful perspective. In the tradition of healing stone therapy, it is considered one of the few stones that does not store negative energies.

Traditional Attributions: In many cultures, citrine was referred to as the “merchant's stone” or “success stone” and associated with prosperity, luck, and positive outcomes for endeavors.

Note: The described effects originate from the tradition of healing stone therapy and are not scientifically proven statements. Gemstones do not replace medical or therapeutic treatment.
