Mineralogical properties

Sunstone is a variety of oligoclase or aventurine feldspar (NaAlSi₃O₈ with Ca content) and belongs mineralogically to the large family of feldspars – together with moonstone and labradorite. Its characteristic golden to reddish-orange shimmer – the so-called aventurescence effect – is created by tiny, platy inclusions of hematite or goethite in the crystal lattice, which reflect light and make the stone glow from within. Its Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5. Sunstone crystallizes in the triclinic system and exhibits a characteristic glassy luster. The color ranges from delicate pale yellow to warm orange to rich reddish-brown – depending on the density and size of the inclusions.
