Sugilite is one of the rarest minerals in the world – a cyclosilicate from the osumilite mineral group with the chemical formula KNa₂(Fe,Mn,Al)₂Li₃Si₁₂O₃₀. The violet to purple-red coloration is caused by manganese ions within the crystal lattice. Mohs hardness: 5.5–6.5, hexagonal crystal system, waxy to vitreous luster. Its name is derived from the Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who first described it in 1944. The original discovery site is in Japan; the most significant deposit is located in South Africa (Wessels Mine, Kalahari). Almost all known sites are largely exhausted – making sugilite one of the most precious gemstone rarities.
