Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, derives its name from the Latin "fluere" (to flow) – a reference to its early use as a flux in the metallurgical industry. It is among the minerals with the greatest color variety: colorless, yellow, green, blue, violet, and multicolored as rainbow fluorite. The green coloration is caused by traces of iron or other impurities in the crystal lattice. Fluorite crystallizes in the cubic system and exhibits characteristic octahedral cleavage.
