Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, got its name from the Latin "fluere" (to flow) – a reference to its early use as a flux in the metallurgical industry. It is one of the minerals with the greatest variety of colours: colourless, yellow, green, blue and violet – and in its multi-coloured variant as Rainbow Fluorite, one of the most colourful stones of all. The different colours are created by various trace elements and radiation influences in the crystal lattice. Fluorite crystallizes in the cubic system and exhibits characteristic octahedral cleavage.
