Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, got its name from the Latin "fluere" (to flow) - a reference to its early use as a flux in the smelting industry. It is one of the minerals with the greatest colour diversity: colourless, yellow, green, blue and purple - and in its multi-coloured variety as Rainbow Fluorite, one of the most colourful stones of all. The different colours are created by various trace elements and radiation influences in the crystal lattice. Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and exhibits characteristic octahedral cleavage.
