Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, derives its name from the Latin "fluere" (to flow) – an allusion to its early use as a flux in the metallurgical industry. It is among the minerals with the greatest color variety: colorless, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The violet coloration is caused by traces of manganese or by natural radiation exposure in the crystal lattice. Fluorite crystallizes in the cubic system and exhibits characteristic octahedral cleavage.
