Garnet is a group of differently colored gemstones with similar crystal structure and chemistry.
Main representatives of the garnet group are: almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite and uvarovite.

The name garnet (Latin for grain) probably refers to the often grainy appearance of the crystals or to their resemblance to the blossoms of the pomegranate tree. The classic garnet is popularly known as the "carbuncle," while the red garnets are almandine and pyrope.
