Garnet is a group of silicate minerals. The red varieties almandine (Fe₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) and pyrope (Mg₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) are the best known – popularly referred to as "carbuncle." Mohs hardness 6.5–7.5. The 6 mm beads display the characteristic vitreous luster and intense red color of garnet. As early as the Middle Ages, the carbuncle was considered one of the most valuable gemstones and was used in crowns and religious artifacts. Significant locations: India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Brazil, Bohemia, Austria.
