Garnet is one of humanity's oldest gemstones – it was valued as a protective and lucky stone as early as antiquity and the Middle Ages. The name is derived from the Latin "granatum" (pomegranate), whose seeds strikingly resemble the red crystals. The typical dark red colour is created by iron and aluminium inclusions in the crystal lattice. Garnet crystallizes in the cubic system and is known for its high refractive index – this is particularly impressive in faceted stones.
Important deposits: India, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Madagascar, Brazil.
