The name garnet (Latin for "grain") probably comes from the grainy shape of garnet crystals or from their resemblance to the blossoms of the pomegranate tree. The classic garnet is popularly known as the "carbuncle," while the red garnet varieties are almandine and pyrope.
Garnet is a group of differently colored gemstones with similar crystal structure and chemistry.
Members of the garnet group are: almandine, grossular, pyrope, spessartine, andradite and uvarovite.
