Garnet is one of humanity's oldest gemstones – already valued as a protective and lucky stone in antiquity and the Middle Ages. Its name is derived from the Latin "granatum" (pomegranate), whose seeds strikingly resemble the red crystals. Colloquially, red garnet is also called "Carbuncle Stone". Garnet is a group of differently coloured gemstones with a similar crystal structure – members include almandine, grossular, pyrope, spessartine, andradite, and uvarovite. The tumble form gives each stone an organic, naturally grown appearance – no two strands are alike.
Significant deposits: India, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Madagascar, Brazil.
