Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red abrasion colors the cooling water blood-red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specular hematite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The 6mm button beads with their facets combine a pleasant size with a lively play of light – the iron-gray to anthracite tone appears timelessly elegant. Genuine hematite is heavy and cool to the touch – a reliable distinguishing feature from pressed hematite powder (hematine).
