Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red grinding abrasion colors the cooling water blood red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specular hematite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The large 8mm button beads with their facets set a striking accent – the iron-grey to anthracite tone looks timelessly elegant and can be worn both alone and combined. Real hematite is heavy and cool to the touch – a reliable distinguishing feature compared to pressed hematite powder (hematine).
