Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red grinding dust turns the cooling water blood-red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specular hematite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The flat, faceted 3 mm button beads appear particularly vibrant due to their faceting and are ideal for delicate, elegant jewelry creations. Real hematite is heavy and cool to the touch – a reliable distinguishing feature compared to pressed hematite powder (hematine).
