Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red abrasive dust colors the cooling water blood red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specular hematite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The 4 mm beads with their faceting combine a pleasant size with a lively metallic sparkle – versatile for use as main beads or spacer beads in modern and classic jewelry creations. Real hematite is heavy and cool to the touch – a reliable distinguishing feature compared to pressed hematite powder (hematine).
