Mineralogy: Hematite (iron oxide, Fe₂O₃)
Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red grinding dust colors the cooling water blood-red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specular hematite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The 5mm balls with their smooth, metallic-lustrous surface are a classic size – versatile and suitable for use as both main beads and accent beads in jewelry creations. Genuine hematite feels heavy and cool – a sure distinguishing feature from pressed hematite powder (hematine).
Important deposits: Brazil, England, China, Czech Republic, Bangladesh.
