Heliotrope (also known as blood jasper or bloodstone) is a microcrystalline quartz (SiO₂, chalcedony group), with a Mohs hardness of 7. The dark green base tone is created by chlorite and epidote inclusions, while the characteristic red spots are caused by iron oxide (hematite). The name is derived from the Greek words "helios" (sun) and "trepein" (to turn). Heliotrope is among the oldest known healing stones—already prized in ancient Egypt, Babylon, and ancient Greece. In the Middle Ages, the red inclusions were associated with the blood of Christ. The faceted cut of the 6 mm beads highlights the contrast between the dark green and red. Major locations: India, Australia, Brazil, USA.
Significance in crystal healing
Heliotrope is considered a powerful protective and healing stone. It is said to strengthen vitality, courage, and determination, as well as to support the blood and circulation (according to crystal healing literature). It is believed to be associated with the root and heart chakras and to have cleansing and grounding effects. These attributions are based on handed-down tradition and are not scientifically proven. They do not replace medical treatment.
