Agates are quartz minerals belonging to the chalcedony group and form in cavities within volcanic rocks. The gradual, phased solidification and drying process creates the layered patterns typical of agates. The white variety of agate is called peace agate. Peace agate often displays a pure white color, although this coloration is frequently achieved through subsequent dyeing and bleaching.
