Jade is one of the oldest and most culturally significant gemstones in the world. The name derives from the Spanish "lendenstein" (loin stone) – an indication that jade has been valued for centuries as a protective and healing stone against kidney ailments. The Chinese name "Yü" means "beautiful stone"; in China, jade is considered a sacred stone and a symbol of virtue, purity, and happiness. The term jade encompasses two different minerals: jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is characterized by a special toughness that makes it so valuable – in prehistoric times, even weapons were made from it. The most valuable variety is Burma Jade (Imperial Jade). This strand consists of genuine Chinese jade (jadeite) in dyed yellow.
