The term jade encompasses two different minerals: jadeite and nephrite. Many things, especially serpentine, are often falsely advertised as jade, especially in jewelry. The name jade (Spanish for "loin stone") indicates that this stone has long been used as a protective and healing stone for kidney diseases. The corresponding Chinese name "yu" means "beautiful stone." Jade is considered a sacred stone there.

Jade (jadeite) is characterized by its exceptional toughness, which, among other things, makes this stone so valuable. In prehistoric times, it was even used to make weapons.
Hadeite has been found in several locations. The most valuable variety is Burmese jade, also known as Imperial jade. Other deposits are found in China, Japan, Canada, and Russia.
