Carnelian is an orange-red variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂), with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its characteristic color is caused by iron oxide inclusions (hematite). The name is derived from the Latin "cornum" (cornelian cherry) – the color is reminiscent of the red berries. As early as ancient Egypt, carnelian was used as a protective stone in jewelry and amulets. The 25 mm stones showcase the gem as an expressive statement piece and allow the natural color gradients to be displayed to their best advantage. Significant locations: Brazil, India, Uruguay, Madagascar.
Significance in crystal healing
Carnelian is considered a stone of vitality, courage, and motivation. It is said to strengthen power, energy, and vitality, as well as to promote a renewed zest for life and good humor during depressive phases. It is believed to stimulate sociability and creative exchange, and is associated with the sacral and solar plexus chakras. These attributions are based on tradition and are not scientifically proven. They do not replace medical treatment.
