Carnelian is an orange to orange-red variety of chalcedony and is one of humanity's oldest gemstones – it was already valued as a protective and lucky stone in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and antiquity. Its characteristic color is due to iron oxide inclusions. This strand is also known as fire agate – a trade name for intensely colored carnelian. Important: Real carnelian is naturally orange colored; red agate, which is often offered as carnelian, is, however, artificially colored. The large drop/tumble shapes (18×24 mm) give the strand an organic, expressive presence.
