Carnelian is an orange to orangish-red variety of chalcedony, with a color spectrum ranging from orange to flesh-red. The characteristic color is caused by natural iron oxide inclusions in the crystal lattice. Carnelian is one of humanity's oldest gemstones and was already valued as a protective and lucky stone in ancient Egypt and antiquity. The small 3mm beads with their smooth surface are ideal as spacer beads or for delicate, warm jewelry creations. Note: Red agate is often referred to as carnelian in trade - unlike this natural stone, however, it is artificially colored.
