Mineralogical Properties

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)₄O₈ and belongs to the large family of feldspar minerals – closely related to moonstone. Its characteristic feature is labradorescence: a vivid play of colors in blue, green, gold, violet, and orange, which arises from light interference on thin layers of different composition within the crystal. The base color is usually a dark grey to grey-green. The Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5. Labradorite crystallizes in the triclinic system. It was named after its first discovery site on the Labrador Peninsula (Canada). Other important sites include Finland, Madagascar, Russia, and Norway.
