Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest and most coveted gemstones in the world. Its name combines the Latin "Lapis" (stone) and the Arabic "Azul" (sky) – a reference to its intense, sky-blue color. Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral, but a rock composed of lazurite (for the deep blue), calcite (white veins), and pyrite (golden gleam). It was mined in Afghanistan over 6,000 years ago and valued as jewelry, a protective stone, and a painting pigment – the famous ultramarine blue of Renaissance painting was derived from ground lapis lazuli. The large 11mm A-quality beads particularly impressively showcase the royal blue.
Significant localities: Afghanistan (Badakhshan), Chile, Russia, Myanmar.
