Lapis Lazuli is one of the oldest and most sought-after gemstones in the world. Its name combines the Latin "Lapis" (stone) and the Arabic "Azul" (sky) - a reference to its intense, sky-blue color. Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral, but a rock composed of lazurite (for the deep blue), calcite (white veins) and pyrite (golden sparkles). It was mined in Afghanistan over 6,000 years ago and valued as jewelry, a protective stone, and a pigment for painting - the famous ultramarine blue of Renaissance painting was derived from ground Lapis Lazuli. The 8mm A-quality beads particularly beautifully display the characteristic royal blue with golden pyrite sparkles.
Significant deposits: Afghanistan (Badakhshan), Chile, Russia, Myanmar.
