Lapis Lazuli is mineralogically a metamorphic rock – a rock mixture of lazurite ((Na,Ca)₈(AlSiO₄)₆(S,SO₄,Cl)₁₂, blue), pyrite (FeS₂, golden inclusions), and calcite (CaCO₃, white veins). Mohs hardness 5–6. The stone owes its intense royal blue to the lazurite and sulfur compounds. The A-grade quality from Afghanistan (Badakhshan province) is characterized by a particularly rich, uniform blue with minimal calcite content – Lapis Lazuli has been mined there for over 6,000 years. The knot is concealed under a silver bead.
