Mineralogical Properties

Mookaite belongs to the large family of Jasper minerals and is thus a microcrystalline quartz mineral (SiO₂) from the chalcedony group. It is formed from the remains of marine organisms (radiolarians) and is therefore a biogenic sedimentary rock. Its characteristic colors – white, beige, ochre yellow, red, and violet – are created by different iron oxide contents and organic inclusions. Its Mohs hardness is 6.5 to 7, which makes it robust and suitable for everyday wear. Mookaite shows a dull to waxy luster and is unique among Jasper varieties in its color diversity. It received its name from the Australian Aborigines, who found it at Mooka Creek – "mooka" means "flowing water" in their language. Location: exclusively Australia (Kennedy Ranges, Western Australia).
