Lapis Lazuli is one of the oldest and most coveted gemstones in the world. Its name combines the Latin "Lapis" (stone) and the Arabic "Azul" (sky) – an indication of its intense, sky-blue color. Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral, but a rock composed of lazurite (for the deep blue), calcite (white veins), and pyrite (golden flecks). It was mined in Afghanistan over 6,000 years ago and was valued as a jewel, a protective stone, and a pigment – the famous ultramarine blue of Renaissance painting was obtained from ground lapis lazuli. The large 10mm AA-quality beads display the characteristic royal blue with particularly intense color and vivid pyrite flecks.
